Poor water quality continues to pose a major threat to human health. Drinking water must be free from chemical substances and microorganisms, which might be dangerous to the health of the user. Sources of water like tube well, ponds, hand pump, tanks, rivers and municipal taps are sometimes contaminated with organic and in-organic matter, which make the water unhygienic and unfit for human consumption. Impure drinking water leads to various dreadful water borne diseases.
As per WHO estimates, 3.4 million people mostly children die every year from water related diseases. Of them Diarrhoeal disease alone amounts to an estimated 4.1 % of the total ‘Disability-Adjusted Life Years’ global burden of disease and is responsible for the deaths of 1.8 million people every year.
Water can be disinfected to kill any pathogens that may be present in the water supply and to prevent them from growing again in the distribution systems. Chlorination, a process controlling disease-causing microorganisms by killing them, is unquestionably the most accepted technique for disinfection of drinking water. According to the World Health Organization, disinfection by chlorine is still the best guarantee of microbiologically safe water.
With multiple sources of drinking water, the state of Haryana was faced with the problem of outbreak of water borne diseases in 2003. Bleaching powder was being used by the Haryana PHED for tube well disinfection of drinking water wherein an operator had to prepare a solution made from bleaching powder and added to the supply through mechanical dosers, which made it practically difficult to control and monitor the dosage of chlorine. Conventional disinfection systems based on bleaching powder and gas chlorinators supplied by local contractors were primarily operator dependent and hence not yielding results. The Public Health Department was subjected to intense pressure to control the epidemic. It was then that some engineers of the department approached Aventura to explore techno-commercial solutions to the problem. The criteria were to find full proof disinfection systems that complied with Central Public Health & Environmental Engineering Organization and WHO guidelines and at the same time effective in the rural set up. The electromechanical systems recommended by Aventura were operator friendly, cost effective, feasible and sustainable even in remote villages. These could be easily synchronized with existing water supply systems.
Aventura was entrusted with pilot sites in 400 villages and the system tested for a period of 2 years before launching full scale operations state wise. The results were quite evident. As per the Director General Health Services, Haryana, the total cases of diarrhea and dysentery cases (rural & urban) in 2003 reduced from 180,268 to 60,847 in over a period of just one year. As per random sampling tests conducted, it was found that the effect of the chlorine lasted for 24 hours unlike 2-3 hours in case of mechanical dosers.
According to Kamal Tiwari, Chief Operating Officer, Aventura Components, the system allows fast and uniform dosing over a wide adjustment range without manual intervention. R.C. Bhardwaj, former Superintendent Engineer, Faridabad PHED says, “Bleaching powder needs to be stored in a dry place away from sunlight. If left open, it oxidizes, thus reducing it to an ineffective lump leading to enormous wastages”. “In contrast, sodium hypo chlorite solution being liquid is more stable as moisture doesn’t affect it. Also no refilling is required before 30 days”, he added. The dosing system operates automatically when the tube well is switched on. “Electromechanical dosing systems are the new generation solution to combat water borne diseases”, says J.P. Nautiyal, Vice President, Deolalikar Consultants, a leading public health engineering consultant. “More and more states need to replicate the Haryana model for their tube well drinking water systems”, he added.
Till date, Aventura has supplied over 3000 pumps to UP Jal Nigam, HSIDC, HUDA and Delhi Jal Board.
